I’m in Sweden at Internet Research 11.  The contretemps about Juan Williams, Sarah Palin, and NPR has even reached me here.

I have not had a chance to look at it in detail, but it is a fascinating moment.  Williams’s unreflective yet honest self-revelation deserves parsing, as does NPR’s reasons for letting him go. It is telling that Williams (and presumably Palin and others) wish to think of “Muslim Dress” as a practice of self-expression and identity, rather than a matter of piety.  Do we think of Amish dress that way?  If so, why is it then not also scandalous?

But, NPR’s action seems defensive and pre-emptory, and a bit ill-advised.  But, I’ll need to look into the matter in more detail.  Perhaps more later…
